A New Jersey baby is alive thanks to the quick action of a retired officer. Former Sheriffs sergeant Steve Eckel was passing by a vehicle in the parking lot of a New Jersey Kohls on Monday when he noticed a baby locked inside the sweltering car. Eckel took quick action, grabbing a sledgehammer from his own vehicle to break open a window and save the child. The mother, Karen Gruen, was arrested for child endangerment and has since be released pending a court trial.
