A bill that will toughen penalties against those who attack police officers received the approval it needed from the Senate Public Safety Committee Tuesday afternoon.

"The response I've received has been overwhelming and something they support, and I can tell you, because I do have friends in law enforcement, that morale is pretty low," said Sen. Sean Tindell.

Senate Bill 160, known as the "Back the Badge" or "Blue Lives Matter" passed the committee unanimously.

It must now go to the Senate rules committee to move forward.

Senator Chad McMahan said that the new bill is not about race. However, it's about law-enforcement officers.

"This has nothing to do with race; this has to do with protecting officers in uniform," McMahan said.
