More police departments across the country are now looking into the technology that would permit 911 emergency dispatchers to obtain text messages.
While calling 9-1-1 is the preferred practice of contact, making text to 9-1-1 accessible is very important for when calling is not a possible or a safe option.
Municipalities with text-to-911 option are promoting the slogan: "Call if you can, text if you can't."
