Whittier Police Officer Keith Boyer was killed in the line of duty during a shootout on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017.

Boyer, a 27-year veteran, was killed in a shootout during a traffic stop on Monday. The driver allegedly had killed his cousin earlier in the day and stolen his vehicle. Another officer and the suspected gunman were both wounded and hospitalized. The shooting remains under investigation.

"He was the best of the best. He was a personal friend of mine for over 25 years," Whittier police Chief Jeff Piper said. "He was respected for his many years of experience and younger officers looked to him for advice and guidance, so did his sergeants."

Officer Keith Boyer is survived by three adult children and his parents.
