A 9 year old girl walked into Barnesville police station and told Officer Ryan Beattie that her parents had allegedly been growing pot. She also told the officer they were selling and smoking it.
“She was clearly upset because she didn’t want to turn her parents in. But at the same time, she knew her parents did wrong,†Officer Ryan Beattie said.
The little girl told the officer that she was looking for a change because the smell of the marijuana smoke would make her feel sick. She was also had concern for her pet. She said that her parents would occasionally blow smoke into the family dog's mouth.
"She was afraid that she would get sick. She was afraid that the dog would get sick," officer Beattie said.
Officer Beattie spoke very highly of the 9 year old girl. “She was very smart and very articulate,†Beattie said. “It was almost like talking to an adult.†“She gave some pretty specific information about things, like types of drug paraphernalia, that no young person ought to have knowledge about," Beattie said.
Police searched the family home on June 24, and found seven marijuana plants under the house, drug paraphernalia and other suspected substances.
Officer Beattie said the parents haven't been charged yet. He said charges will happen when the drug testing unit return results of evidence.
The child was sent to live with her grandparents, but recently returned to live with her parents.
“We have spoken with the parents,†officer Beattie said. “There is no sign of retaliation from her parents. Both of them understood they were wrong and showed remorse.â€
Officer Beattie told reporters that the little girl is doing well. “She seems to be well taken care of,†Beattie said.

What a sensible child she is; it must be so difficult for her to report her parents. It is good that the story has worked out well and her parents are taking good care of her and not holding a grudge. She must love their dog very much; I am actually surprised that these are the parents who have brought her up.
