Bensalem Police Department is mourning the loss of Detective Kevin Cornish who died Saturday morning during a 5K in Northeast Philadelphia.

The 42-year-old husband and father was running in the race to help raise money for his parish, St. Anselm Parish, and its youth programs.

Shortly after the 9:00 a.m. race started, Detective Cornish fell to the ground. Officials believe he suffered a heart attack. Authorities said other police officers who were also participating in the race, performed CPR on Cornish before he was transported to Aria-Torresdale hospital. He was pronounced dead at 11:20 a.m.

"It's a loss to the community. Here's a guy who last year got 'Bensalem Rotary Officer of the Year' for all his charity work. He died doing charity work," said Fred Harran, Bensalem Public Safety Director.

Detective Cornish was a 12 year veteran with the department, he was part of the Special Victims Unit specializing in crimes against children.

Authorities say an autopsy will confirm the cause of death.

So sad to hear this and 42 is still so young! He still had so many good years ahead of him and so much he could have contributed to society.
