Sebastian County Deputy Bill Cooper was shot and killed after he and other officers responded to a domestic violence call that involved an armed subject. The suspect opened fire, fatally wounding Cooper and wounding the Hackett Police Department's chief.

"Essentially it was an ambush," said Fort Smith police spokesman Sgt. Daniel Grubbs. "It just appears this guy was waiting on us to get here."

The suspect eventually surrendered to police was taken to the Crawford County Detention Center.

Deputy Bill Cooper served with the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office for 16 years.
