It is our sad duty to announce the death of Deputy Sheriff Eugene Kostiuchenko. Sheriff Eugene Kostiuchenko was struck and killed by a drunk drive during a routine traffic stop on the Ventura Free. Sheriff Kostiuchenko was returning to his vehicle when he was struck by the vehicle which then fled the scene. The driver of the vehicle crashed a short distance away and was taken into custody by officers who witnessed the events. The driver was arrested and charged with felony DUI and felony hit and run with additional charges pending.

Deputy Kostiuchenko is survived by his wife and stepson. Sheriff Kostiuchenko was a member of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office for 11 years.

People who get behind the wheel after drinking should be charged with a more serious crime when they injure or kill someone. If someone dies because you have put everyone around you in danger that should be more than involuntary manslaughter.
