Ilana Friedman, 51, a former director at United Hebrew Cemetery, has admitted to stealing almost $1 million from the Staten Island cemetery over a six year period. The money was to be spent on headstones among other things for the cemetery. Instead Friedman treated herself to fancy meals, trips and concerts, officials said.

A source familiar with this case said she spent the cash on everything from groceries at Costco to “Mary Poppins†tickets.

Friedman had pleaded guilty to grand larceny in Staten Island Supreme Court Tuesday. Ilana Friedman and her husband, the cemetery’s former president had made a deal with the state attorney general’s office to pay back $1.1 million in restitution. The Friedmans are both barred by the cemetery and funeral business.

“The Friedmans abused their posts at this Staten Island cemetery to enrich themselves,†and “will now pay for their shameless misconduct,†Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said.
