The incident happened Sunday night when a fight broke out in the giant crowd that was there to enjoy a concert near Montrose Beach.
Six officers on bicycles responded to a call around 7:30 p.m. They went into the crowd to break up a fight. Soon after that there was a call about a "man with a gun" and the officer started looking for the suspect who matched the description.
Police said as they were conducting the search, people in the crowd began to throw glass bottles, rocks, cans and other objects. A supervisor ordered the officers out of the crowd and called in a "10-1", code for officer in need of assistance.
Police regrouped and evacuated the large crowd in the park and closed the beach early.
"Everybody got serious, throwing bottles, throwing beer. It was horrible," said Jasmine Mejias, 18, who was in the crowd. "Once everybody spread out, they started throwing huge liquor bottles, cans, a lot of people got hit.
"Everybody was running so quickly, I was literally trying not to get in the head," Mejias said.
"There was probably 10 bottles thrown at once in every direction. It was really hard to dodge any of it, to be honest, especially when you're trying to run away."
Nine males are in custody. Felony charges are pending against two suspects for aggravated battery to an officer and two others for aggravated assault to a police officer. Six people are looking at a variety of charges.
Authorities reported the bands didn't have permits to perform in the park. They also said word of the concert was advertised through social media.
Police have yet to release information about the officers injuries.
More details in this post will be released as soon as they are made available.
