A courageous livery cabbie saved four kids who leaped from a second-floor window to escape a house fire in Queens Sunday morning, witnesses said.
The driver was coming home from a party and was in the neighborhood dropping off a friend when he saw the fire.
A neighbor said the hero ran to the side of the house and was telling neighbors to call 911.
“He went to the side of the house, and he told them all to jump,†said Tracy-Ann Thomas, 35, who lives across the street. “He had his hands stretched out and was catching every one of them.†“Some of them didn’t have all their clothes on. So I gave them slippers and sheets to wrap themselves up in.â€
“The whole house was smoking, and the flames were shooting out,’’ Thomas said of the 7 a.m. blaze. “One of the kids even bumped him in the forehead’’ as they jumped, she said. “I told him, ‘You did good, you’re a star,’ and he kind of shrugged it off.’’
Neighbors said the family moved in just two months ago.
There were no working smoke detectors in the house, according to a deputy fire chief at the scene.
Five kids and 3 adults were taken to Jamaica Hospital with minor injuries. The fire started in the basement and does not appear suspicious, authorities said.
