its been over year and half

I have recently applied for a position with the local Police Dept and part of the application asks about drug use. I have smoked pot in the past, but not that much. The last time I did try it was over a year and half ago. I didn't feel it was a good idea to lie. How will my past use factor into the hiring process?

It's smart that you chose not to lie about your history on drug use. Unfortunately a year and half is not long enough, it shows that you not committed in LE. In most Police Departments you have to wait at least five years to apply to have a better chance.
