Jailer Robert Ransom suffered a fatal heart attack Friday, September 30, 2016 while giving medical assistance to an inmate inside the Marvin A. Smith Criminal Justice Facility.
Both Ransom and the inmate were taken to the hospital for treatment. Doctors were not able to revive Ransom and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The inmate was treated and then later returned to jail.
Ransom, 62, had served with the Gregg County Sheriff's Office since 2005. Before that he served with the Porter County, Indiana, Sheriff's Office for 25 years.
