Travis Deon Wilson, 18, accused of shooting at officers in Riviera Beach on Monday has turned himself in, according to Riviera Beach Police.

Wilson, 18, surrendered late Tuesday, said Police spokeswoman Rose Anne Brown.

The incident began when police responded to a report of a man asleep in a car parked at a gas station pump in the 2500 block of Broadway. The witness said a gun was in plain view on the passenger seat, Brown said.

Witnesses said 30 to 40 shots were fired between the suspect and officers in less than a minute.

Authorities said the suspect drove south of Blue Heron Boulevard. Police placed stop sticks to deflate the tires on the suspects vehicle. Wilson tried to flee, but he crashed in the 2400 block of Broadway, police said. He allegedly then attempted unsuccessfully to carjack a passing motorist, Brown said.

Seven city officers, as is procedure were placed on paid leave Monday after returning fire while they chased him, Brown said. She added the officers will be on paid leave until the department's Internal Affairs division investigates their role in the incident. She said no officers were injured in the shooting incident.

Police are looking at video footage from several different businesses in the area. Police also said the suspect's vehicle was a rental car.

One witness, Vincent Escobar, said he was cleaning windows in the area at the time of the shooting incident. "Right when they started shooting, I just ran," he said, and he ducked behind a police car. He said he didn't get a good look at the suspect.

Wilson was taken into custody at the Palm Beach County Jail. Police haven't released information on what charges he would face.

Finally, rational thinking occurs; no one can escape the long arm of the law. Why are so many guns in the hands of civilians? It is so sad when young people choose the wrong path when they have so much potential. He is barely an adult yet he is already in big trouble. I hope he gets the rehabilitation he needs to fit in society.

Yeah, after being insane, nothing like turning himself in, cutting the losses sometimes it the best option.
