New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced he plans to close Rikers Island.
According to officials, Mayor Bill de Blasio has recently withdrawn his objections to closing Rikers Island jail complex.
"We're closing a jail that's past it's shelf life," stated Nicholas Turner, president of the Vera Institute of Justice.
The closure would involve taking the inmates from Rikers Island and placing them into others jails in the city's boroughs.
“The commission believes that the use of Rikers Island must be phased out over the next 10 years and its facilities demolished,” stated in a report.
