An off-duty Chelsea police officer died in a motorcycle crash Thursday night, police said.

"On behalf of all the members of the Chelsea Police Department, it is with deep sadness and extreme difficulty that I must announce the sudden passing of our Beloved Brother Police Officer John Bruttaniti," wrote Chief Brian Kyes.

Chief Kyes said Officer John Bruttaniti, 41, was driving on the Lynnway toward his home in Lynn when he crashed.

The crash happened about 10:30 p.m. on Route 1A, between Commercial Street and Marine Street. Authorities say for some reason Officer Bruttaniti lost control of his motorcycle and struck another one. He then slammed into a utility pole.
