An off-duty St. Louis county police officer fatally shot a man he argued with about Black Lives Matter on Facebook after the suspect allegedly broke into the officer's house.

Authorities say the 20-year-old man was trying to break in to the officer's home just before 6 p.m. Saturday.

The suspect, Tyler Gebhard, attempted to get in the home by throwing a large cement planter through a rear glass door, according to police.

The officer's wife, mother-in-law and two young kids hid in a back room and called 911, authorities say.

The police officer gave Gebhard verbal commands, which Gebhard ignored, police say.
"Fearing for his life and the lives of the others in the home, the off-duty officer shot the suspect," police said in a statement.

The officer's family knew and feared the suspect, authorities said. He had allegedly threatened them on social media before.

Gebhard's uncle, Patrick Brogan, said his nephew had suffered from bi-polar disorder and sometimes wouldn't take his medicine.

"Tyler was going over to fight," the uncle, 57-year-old Patrick Brogan told the paper. "When he got there, he was met with a gun, and the gun killed him."

The unnamed officer has been place on administrative leave.
