Officer Justin Scherlen, 39, died on Thursday while he was on a family trip to New Mexico, according to Amarillo authorities.
"The Amarillo Police Department is saddened to confirm that Officer Justin Scherlen, 39, passed away earlier today while on a family trip in New Mexico," an Amarillo official said.
Officials say Officer Scherlen unexpectedly died during his sleep. Scherlen was seriously injured in a head-on collision in September while on duty. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of his death. Authorities believe there were complications of his recovery from his head-on collision.
Officer Justin Scherlen had served the Amarillo Police Department for twelve years.
