Officer Lucas Chellew, who crashed into a pole while pursuing a motorcyclist in South Sacramento died Wednesday, February 22, 2017.
Officer Chellew was taken to UC Davis Medical Center after suffering major injuries. According to officials, he died at the hospital at 6:11 p.m.
Authorities say the fleeing driver in the pursuit got away. However, he later was caught.
“Officer Chellew’s great courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten,” Gov. Jerry Brown said.
Chellew, 31, was a police officer with California Highway Patrol for eight years. He was assigned to the South Sacramento Area Office.
He leaves behind a wife, daughter and son.
