Officials from the Lowell Police Department say a 10-year veteran of the department shot and wounded a man who rammed a stolen truck he was driving into an occupied police car after being pulled over in the city.

According to authorities the officer Philip Valliant is now on paid leave pending interviews with investigators, which is scheduled for later this week. "When somebody goes through an event like this, it's very traumatic," Capt. Thomas Kennedy said. "We want to make sure the officer has all the medical treatment he needs to resume his role."

The incident unfolded Friday night around 7:30 p.m. following a chase. The suspect, 32-year-old Christopher Bischoff of Lowell, Massachusetts allegedly backed the stolen truck into the police vehicle around 7:30 p.m. Friday in an effort to evade capture.

Officer Valliant got out of his vehicle and fired a few rounds at Bischoff before he left the vehicle and attempted to get away by foot. Bischoff did not get far, he was apprehended by other police officers street just down the same street.

Authorities say officer Valliant was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and released that same night. Bischoff was taken to the hospital with serious but non life threatening gunshot wounds to the leg and shoulder. He remains at the Tufts Medical Center while under police custody.

"Christopher Bischoff's alleged behavior could have injured a police officer or a civilian," District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a statement. "The suspect reportedly was in a stolen pickup which took off down the road rather than stopping and then deliberately rammed a patrol car. Fortunately, no innocent person was hurt on this street because of Bischoff's alleged actions."
