Albuquerque Police Department said the officer who was shot on January 3 during a DWI stop has been released from the hospital.

The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. when Officer Lou Golson pulled an SUV over during a routine traffic stop. As Officer Golson approached the car the suspect started shooting, hitting the officer two times.

Officer Golson was able to return fire, however the suspect took off. Police say the suspect, thirty-six-year-old Christopher Cook, was eventually caught.

Authorities say one of the bullets went through Officer Golson left side and broke his left femur, three other shots were stopped by his bulletproof vest. He also broke his wrist when he fell to the ground.

Golson had undergone three surgeries, and has already started physical therapy, according to authorities. "He was laughing and joking and in good spirits," said Celina Espinoza, a spokeswoman for the department. "He and his family were so touched by the outpouring of support."

Espinoza says Officer Golson would like to return to work as quickly as possible, however it will be at least a few months before he can return to work.

At least there's some good news on the 'crimes against the police' front. Not all of them are bad apples so people shouldn't go around attacking them either. Hopefully the perpetrator will be caught.
