Authorities in Arizona confirmed on Friday that the body discovered buried in the yard of a Thatcher home earlier in the week was that of a 3-year-old girl.
Police first learned about the victim after a probation officer checked on Joshua Matthew Cisneros at a motel, but found her alleged brothers, ages 6 and 11, alone instead.
Cisneros, 23, is dating the boys' mother, Anna Marie Sanchez, 28. The officer called in case workers to take the children into state custody.
When the siblings were talking to child welfare workers they had informed them about their missing sister.
Police started their investigation and learned the little girl had possibly been missing since March 2012.
Investigators discovered later on that the girl was deceased and had been buried in a backyard on 1st Street in Thatcher.
The couple who are being investigated as persons of interest in the death of the little girl, the victim's alleged mother, Anna Marie Sanchez, and her boyfriend, Joshua Matthew Cisneros, had moved out of their Thatcher home in March 2013.
Authorities had to knock on the door of the new owners and inform them they had a search warrant in and outside the home.
A search of the property was conducted and a body believed to be that of the missing child was found on Wednesday afternoon.
“They said they had to bring people into dig up the little girl,†the unnamed resident said.
It took authorities 6-8 hours of digging to find the body, Thatcher Police Chief Shaffen Woods said.
When the resident received the news that authorities discovered the body in the backyard she said to reporters, “I hope that little girl gets a proper burial.†Authorities believe she is the same child that reportedly disappeared in March.
Dr. Gregory Hess said there will be more testing needed for an official determination. He also said the exam was limited because of the body's post-mortem changes.
"Circumstantially, we believe the remains to be the daughter of the woman in custody," said Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Gregory Hess of the Pima County Medical Examiner. "We will await a DNA identification to confirm the identity."
Authorities are treating the case as a potential homicide.

They killed and buried this little girl; furthermore they moved houses and their lives continued. That is just heartless. Why target this little girl, did they hit her too hard that she died, therefore they buried her in panic? How were the other kids able to keep quiet about their sister? I hope that they will provide the answers.
