Police are searching for two suspects who reportedly shot and killed an Orthodox rabbi while he was heading toward his temple in North Miami Beach on Saturday morning.
Rabbi Joseph Raksin, 60, was walking on the 800 block of NE 175th Street around 9 a.m. when the two young male suspects approached him. A witness told police there was an altercation before the gunfire.
The suspects fled the scene, one on a bicycle and the other by foot.
"The middle of broad daylight, 9 a.m. in the morning, walking to synagogue on your holy day of Sabbath and just being killed in the middle of the street, this was a senseless act of murder and there's no other way to describe that," said Jeb Handwerger.
As of now police believe the shooting was a botched robbery, not a hate crime.

"We don't carry money on Saturday," said Jennifer Lehrfield. Valuables and money are left behind the holy Sabbath day. "This was a senseless act of murder and there's no other way to describe that," Lehrfield added.
However, Raksin's daughter, Shuly Labkowsi, thinks her father was targeted because of his religion. "I believe it was a hate crime, simply because he was a Jew," she said.
Police reported Raksin was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center where he died.
The Jewish community of Miami is offering a $50,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the two suspects.
Rabbi Joseph Raksin, originally from Brooklyn, was in Miami visiting relatives when the shooting occurred.

There are so many hateful people in the world we are living in. They killed this Rabbi with no second thought in broad daylight. They have no value for life with too much time in their hands. I hope that the long arm of the law will catch up with them soonest. May those left behind find peace as they grieve their beloved.
