Sergeant Kenneth Steil succumbed to gunshot wounds he sustained on September 12th when a suspect shot him.

Steil, 46, was taken to St. John Hospital where it was initially thought he would get better. However, Sergeant Ken experienced complications and died on September 17th, 2016.

"He thought he was going to be going home this week," said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

Sergeant Kenneth Steil, a 20-year veteran for the Detroit Police Department before moving to the 9th Precinct.

“He was an American hero,†said Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

Sergeant Kenneth Steil is survived by his wife and two sons, ages 3 and 5.
