Sergeant Lucas was shot and killed from an accidental discharge of a firearm by his colleague.
"Very well respected within Sheriff's office. He truly was a leader, he was looked up to," Sheriff Margaret Mims said.
Sergeant Rod Lucas, 46, was a twenty-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office. He is survived by his wife, four children and one grandchild.
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing, police are trying to determine what caused the weapon to fire.
