Lea County Sheriff Steve Ackerman was killed January 17, 2017.

Ackerman, 46, died in a single-car crash near Encino in Central New Mexico on Tuesday night.

He had been with the department since 1991. He was with the Lea County Sheriff's Office for 14 years, and before that he served 12 years with the Lea County Detention Center.

Sheriff Steve Ackerman is survived by his wife and two children.
