New York Police have identified the suspect they are looking for that is associated with a deadly hit and run in Brooklyn.
Authorities are confident Robert DeCarlo, 26, was behind a stolen minivan that plowed into a mother and her two daughters on Flatlands Avenue and East 46th Street in the Flatlands area around 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Police say the victim who died was 12-year old Joey Sellers. Her 9-year-old sister and 38-year-old mother are both in the hospital in critical condition.
The family who live a few blocks away on Avenue K were walking on the sidewalk when the stolen 2005 Dodge Caravan hopped the curb and plowed them down, police said.
"He lost control, he turn two times, boom, boom and then he go on top of the kids," a witness said. "We saw the two girls laying there bleeding, and like yo let's move the car, there might be a third," he added.
Five or six guys pushed the car over and found Joey Sellers underneath it. "Her eyes were open and she wasn't moving at all," Shamar Brooks told reporters. "She wasn't blinking."
Kareem Johnson who also tried to help said ,“They weren’t moving, their eyes were closed. All their bones looked broken.â€
Witnesses said as they were helping the family, the driver crawled out of the car and ran off.
One witness ran after the suspect but he eventually got away. He told police the suspect went running through the backyards of the neighborhood.
"He went through somebody's yard jumped the fence," he said. "Jumped after him, then he jumped a second fence, I jumped after him again. People are heartless. How can you hit three kids and run? That's heartless."
“I don’t know where the strength came from, but as soon as we saw someone underneath, we moved the car,†Johnson said. “One of them was bleeding from the head. It was like a big hole in the head.â€
Witness Stefano Girgenti was across the street from where the tragic incident happened. He said the vehicle was flying down Flatlands Ave. “He was going 120 miles an hour. He lost control. It was crazy,†said Girgenti.
Authorities think the suspect had stolen the car on June 27 from Tommy's Auto Repair in Sheepshead Bay. DeCarlo is a white male with brown eyes and short black hair, approximately 5-foot-7 and weighing 170 pounds.
Police said the suspect was not being pursued at the time of the crash.
