Paterson police have arrested Jhymiere Moore, 19, of Paterson, after he turned himself in. Authorities have charged the suspect with first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes.
Genesis Rincon was struck in the head with a stray bullet, while riding her scooter Saturday evening. On Sunday she was declared brain dead, and her family decided to take her off life support Monday.
The family chose to donate their little girl’s organs to save other lives.
Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes spoke at the press conference today. “The community involvement is critical in this particular case,†said Valdes.
“Seeing Paterson detectives, as well as the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, handing out fliers, asking for information, really begging for information. That pressure led this defendant, in my estimation, to turn himself in,†Valdes said.
Mayor Jose Torres also spoke at the news conference. He praised everyone that was involved with the case.
“I am pleased to stand beside Prosecutor Valdes and the leaders of our police department to announce that justice has been delivered for Genesis and her family with the arrest of the suspect within 72 hours,†Mayor Jose Torres said.
Bail has been set at $2 million cash. If convicted, Moore faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Valdes said the victim was not the intended target of the bullet that hit her in the head. She said the investigation is still ongoing. This story will be updated as information becomes available.
