A suspect hijacked a Washington, D.C., Metrobus earlier this morning and fatally struck a pedestrian.

The suspect allegedly boarded the bus around 10:30 a.m. One stop later, he put a pair of needle-nose pliers to the bus driver's neck, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said.

The passengers ran off the bus when they witnessed the attack. Before escaping, the driver was able to press the emergency button which then got the police to respond to the scene.

The suspect drove over a curb in the gas station and fatally hit a pedestrian. The victim was then transported to a nearby hospital with critical injuries, where he was pronounced dead.

Chief Lanier said the suspect is in custody. He also said the entire deadly hijacking lasted three minutes.

The bus driver suffered a back injury in the process, he was taken to the hospital. No passengers were injured.
