House Republicans and Senate Democrats did not reach an agreement by the midnight deadline on a spending bill to keep the government running. Therefore there was a shutdown of nonessential services and the furlough of nonessential personnel affecting thousands of federal workers.
“Unfortunately, we do not have a clear indication that Congress will act in time for the President to sign a Continuing Resolution before the end of the day tomorrow, October 1, 2013,†said Sylvia M. Burwell, Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget in a memo. “Therefore, agencies should now execute plans for an orderly shutdown due to the absence of appropriations.â€
They will meet again Tuesday morning hoping to settle a deal with the House that will fund the government.
This doesn’t only have an effect on the government workers being out of work, the national parks will also be closed.
If it continues, it will keep over 800,000 public workers home because the government will not be able to fund their employment.
“We may do this for a day. We may do this for a week. We may do this for a month. It’s going to end up the same way,†Arizona Sen. John McCain said. “It ends by us not repealing Obamacare.â€
This is the first government shutdown since 1996, it was closed for 26 days when President Bill Clinton was in the White House.
