What do you do with your off duty gun when you get home?

Hey all, just hoping you guys can help me with an argument/debate my wife and I are having. I will hopefully be entering the LA County Sheriff Academy in April. My wife and I are wondering what you guys do with the gun you carry on/off duty and to -from work when you are at home. I say it needs to be accessible, but reasonably out of the way. She says it must be out of sight, out of mind.

Just wondering what you veteran officers have found to be a happy medium.
