CPD Officer Steven Smith Remembered One Year After His Death

It has been a year since Columbus SWAT officer Steven Smith died from injuries he suffered in a standoff.

"His spirit and that enthusiasm that he brought to work every day, that carries on in us and through us," said Columbus Police Sgt. Joe Podolski.

SWAT Officer Steven Smith was shot in the head during a standoff with a suspect April 10, 2016. He was transported to OSU Medical Center in critical condition. Two days later, Officer Smith passed away.

Officer Steven Smith served twenty-seven years with the Columbus Police Department. He was a patrol officer, a helicopter pilot, served with the dive team and the SWAT team.

He is survived by his wife and two children.
