A gang member who was paroled from jail just a few days ago shot and killed officer Keith W. Boyer, a 27-year veteran of the Whittier Police Department.
Officer Boyer and a second Whittier officer were responding to a traffic accident when they were attacked.
"As they went to pat him down for any weapons, that's when he pulled out his gun and that's when he started shooting," said Lt. John Corina of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department
The second officer was wounded and is currently in stable condition, Lt. John Corina said.
Authorities say the unidentified suspect was wounded the exchange of gunfire and is expected to recover.
