Protests broke out on Tuesday in Charlotte, North Carolina, after a police officer fatally shot a black man while trying to serve an outstanding warrant for a different person.

Police used tear gas to disperse protesters. At least twelve officers had been injured, police cars damaged and Interstate 85 was shut down following the shooting.

43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott was fatally shot at an apartment complex. Authorities said the man killed had a gun. However, his family members said he was holding a book.

Police say Scott exited his car holding a gun, then got back inside. When the officers approached the vehicle, he got out of his vehicle with the gun again. They considered Scott to be "an imminent deadly threat to the officers who subsequently fired their weapon striking the subject," authorities said.

"Police did not find a book where Keith Lamont Scott was shot Tuesday", said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney.

Investigators recovered a gun and were interviewing witnesses.
