SALINAS, California. Giovanni Pacheco, 21, was picked up and arrested Monday for suspicion of opening fire in front of a Salinas taco shop. Officers said it was a gang related fight that killed three people and wounding four others.
The 1:30 a.m. fight started inside Taco's Choice restaurant and proceeded outside, police said.
When officers arrived they found a 22 year old man dead from gunshots wounds. They also discovered that a 28 year old man had also been shot a few times and was taken to a local hospital, however when arriving there he was pronounced dead.
A third person, 25-year-old man died from gunshot wounds Monday afternoon after he was taken to the hospital in critical condition, said Cmdr. Sheldon Bryan.
"The four other victims, including a 53-year-old woman who was shot multiple times, were expected to survive." Cmdr. Dave Shaw said.
Detectives were questioning witnesses and collecting surveillance videos from the business that surround the area.
Police said that the brawl moved into the parking lot, where it escalated into "a pretty decent-sized fight" before a person took out their firearem and started shooting into the large crowd.
Salinas, a town in Central California, has seen a rise in violent crime recently. There have been 14 killings to date so far this year, including 10 in the past 12 days.
Shaw told reporters that the authorities have been trying to be a step ahead of the violence.
"There's no real way to find out what's motivating these guys to pick it up all of a sudden, a spokeperson said.
Giovanni Pacheco is in custody and booked into Monterey County Jail on three counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder, Salinas police said.
