View attachment 133CLEVELAND. The house where Ariel Castro kept the three women imprisoned and raped for about a decade will be demolished this week.
Neighbors told reporters that on Monday they saw Castro's family and friends remove his personal items from the home. Neighbors are very happy and relieved that the house is coming down. The electricity was turned off at Castro's home on Seymour Avenue on Monday.
Demolition of the 'house of horrors' is slated to begin this Wednesday. A contractor is taking down the house at no charge.
“Every day on the street, people are pointing and taking pictures,” said resident, DeAndrea Harris.
“That’s good for my kids not to look at it anymore. So they don’t have to see a big, tall house with boards on the walls,” added Harris.
Gus Frangos, president of Cuyahoga Land Bank acquired the home last week said they will work with the community and especially the three victims to see what will be put on the property. One of the victims told a neighbor she would like to see a park including a statue of an angel.
The 53-year-old Castro was sentenced last week to life without parole plus 1,000 years after pleading guilty to 937 counts related to the kidnapping, rape and aggravated murder. Looking at a possible death sentence for beating and starving a pregnant Knight until she miscarried, Castro made a plea deal.
A spokeswoman for Ohio's prisons department says Ariel Castro will start his life term in prison isolated from other inmates and won't go into general population once he enters the prison system. She stated that it's for his own protection because of his high profile case. Castro remained in jail Friday. He will be going under medical and mental health evaluations after he is placed in prison.
The three victims escaped on May 6 when a neighbor heard one of the victims banging and screaming for help at Castro's front door.
