Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro may have died from autoerotic asphyxiation, not suicide according to a new report.
Prison guards found Castro with his pants and underwear around his ankles, leading the state to send those facts to the state highway patrol to consider the possibility of auto-erotic asphyxiation, according to the report from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
"He was hanging from a hinge in the window of his cell by a sheet wrapped around his neck. His pants and underwear were pulled down to his ankles. The relevance of this finding is unclear. These facts, however, were relayed to the Ohio State Highway Patrol for consideration of the possibility of auto-erotic asphyxiation," the report said.
In the report released on Thursday it said the guards found a Bible open to John Chapters 2 and 3 and "had pictures of his family out and arranged in a poster-board fashion."
Castro did not leave a suicide note The report suggests but does not conclude about whether Castro had killed himself that way, but added, "No other immediate observations about the scene led to conclusions about the motivation for the self-inflicted death."
Castro was a few weeks into a life sentence after pleading guilty to kidnapping three women in Cleveland.
