Christopher Delcid, 21, allegedly dumped hot sauce in the 4-year-old's mouth. He then duct taped it shut as punishment.
Delcid, not the boy's biological father was arrested Tuesday. Police took Katherine Rodriguez, the boys mother into custody Wednesday night.
Police arrested Delcid after they found the little boy sitting alone in the Danvers Extended Stay hotel room. That is where the little boy is living with his mother, Delcid and two other kids.
When the officer asked why he was sitting alone, the boy answered he was being punished because he was bad. He then told police Delcid poured hot sauce in his mouth and hit him with a belt.
"Delcid had put hot sauce in his mouth and then put duct tape over his mouth as a punishment for bring bad," prosecutor Lindsay Shaheen said in court Thursday. "Officers were able to also see bruises covering his buttocks."
Katherine Rodriguez, was in court Thursday facing arraignment on child abandonment charges and permitting injury to a child.
The boy's grandmother told reporters she was very upset with her daughter. "She left him home alone. It was very stupid. But she did. And now she's paying for it," she said. The grandmother also said she doesn't think her daughter abused her grandson. She thought Delcid was great with her grandchildren until now. "I didn't know he was whacking him with a belt. That would never go with me," she said.
Delcid pleaded not guilty to assault and battery on a child and other charges. He is being held on $250,000 bail.
Rodriguez was charged with permitting assault on a child and abandoning. She was held on $100,000 bail.
The couple have two children together, 6 and 18 month old. All three are now in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.
