Hungry sea lion pulls man holding fish off boat in California
Mon Apr 6, 2015 7:39am EDT

(Reuters) - A man was injured on Sunday after he was pulled into the water by a sea lion that jumped from the water at a San Diego marina and grabbed a fish he was holding, authorities said.

The sea lion jumped onto the railing of a boat at the Hyatt Mission Bay Marina and snatched a fish being held by a man on the boat, said San Diego Fire Rescue spokesman Lee Swanson.

The man was pulled into the water for about 15 seconds, Swanson said, and was brought to a hospital where he was treated for cuts on his arm and hand.

Media, citing witnesses including lifeguards, reported the man was posing for a photo with the large fish when the incident occurred.

California sea lions, many of them pups, have been washing ashore stranded and hungry in record numbers in recent months.

Now we know we had better watch out for sea lions as they will come right out the water to get what they want. Hunger can drive anyone crazy.

Just about any creature can jump out of the sea. He was lucky it was only a sea lion, although they are rather big . I can still picture Jaws and sharks can jump out too so he was fortunate it wasn't a shark or whale as the outcome could have been very different. You have to respect the sea.

Obviously he won't be posing for selfies on boats anymore. It's one of those once bitten twice shy stories. Strange though, the last time I read something about sea lions, one of them was saving a man who wanted to commit suicide.

- ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
A man who survived a suicide attempt off San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and was kept afloat by a sea lion has relayed his story to a NSW Police suicide prevention conference.

Aww. Sea lions can be very violent when they are very hungry, I guess. Well, everyone can go a little mad sometimes when food is scarce. I would be too. Anyway, good thing he didn't suffer from really serious injuries. He's still lucky.
