The Charlotte-Mecklenburg police headquarters was evacuated Tuesday, Sept. 28, after a suspicious package was discovered inside their department.

The suspicious package was found in the mail room by an employee. Police stated there was no phone call or threat made to the department.

Police evacuated the building and cordoned off several blocks around headquarters.

Authorities brought in a bomb-sniffing K-9, which did alert on the package.

“When a bomb dog alerts on it, it isn’t a guarantee, but the dogs are trained to detect explosives and chemical components used to make explosives,†said Capt. Mike Campagna.

Around 8:30 p.m., a robot removed what CMPD spokesman Rob Tufano called a “suspicious device†from headquarters.

Authorities say the device contained a cell phone, flashlight and bulb.

No other details were provided. PS will continue to update this story when more information is released.
