Two La Crosse police officers were attempting to take a man into custody on a felony warrant when the suspect allegedly tried to stab an officer. Authorities said the incident happened at 809 Rose Street when the two officer were trying to arrest fifty-three year old Randy R. Burzinski.
While officer Charles Frandsen and officer Richard Rank were attempting to place the suspect in custody, Burzinski allegedly drew a knife from his waistband and lunged the knife at officer Frandsen’s stomach. The officer saw the weapon and was able to move back, narrowly avoiding being stabbed. Officer Richard Rank pushed Burzinski into a couch and officer Frandsen was then able to use his taser on Burzinski.
"Burzinski apparently made contact with Frandsen's duty belt, which might have been what saved the officer from serious injury," said La Crosse County Deputy District Attorney Michelle Keller. "He could have easily killed either one of these officers."
After putting the suspect in handcuffs, they discovered Burzinski was bleeding. According to police, it appeared Burzinski had stabbed himself while trying to stab the officer. Burzinski claims he did not try to stab the officer, and that he stabbed himself because he wanted to feel pain and he did not want to back to prison.
He was transported to the hospital for treatment and then taken to La Crosse County Jail where his was booked on charges of first degree recklessly endangering safety, battery to law enforcement officers, and a probation violation.
