A student at Dyer County High School in Newbern, Tennessee was allegedly suspended for saying “bless you†after a classmate sneezed.
According to Kendra Turner she was reprimanded by her teacher for the cordial bless you.
When the teacher asked why she said it, the senior defended her actions and was sent to an administrator. Turner said she finished the class period in in-school suspension.
“She said that we’re not going to have godly speaking in her class and that’s when I said we have a constitutional right,†said Turner.
Turner’s family met with school administrators. They said the teacher claimed Turner was being disruptive and aggressive.
Dyer County Schools superintendent has yet to comment on incident. However someone from the school said there is a strict policy in the keyboarding classroom against "outbursts," including saying "bless you" when someone sneezes.
Turner feels that her teacher was taking issue with her religion.
“It’s alright to defend God and it’s our constitutional right because we have a freedom of religion and freedom of speech,†said Turner.
