Officials say Pettway's patrol vehicle left the roadway and struck several trees. First responders had to cut Pettway from his car, and was pronounced dead a short time later.
“The vehicle did leave the roadway. Troopers are actively investigating the crash and we can’t comment on anything at this time until the crash investigation is complete,” said Sgt. Steve Jarrett.
Deputy Levi Pettway had been with the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office for twelve years. He is survived by his wife.
