Detroit police said an 8-year-old boy died after being shot at home on the city's east side.
The shooting incident happened about 1:15 a.m. Wednesday when the suspect walked up to the back of a townhouse and began shooting into the residence.
Police said a bullet went through a wall and struck the victim. The little boy who was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The boy's mother was also hit by a gunshot and was taken to the hospital, her current condition is unknown.
According to family at the scene, they say the suspect may have been upset with the victim’s mother.
Sgt. Michael Woody said they have a "good idea" of who they're searching for and are working to track him down. “The person we are talking to has not been arrested or been identified as a suspect in the shooting,†Sgt. Woody said. “He’s nothing more than a person of interest in this case and is being interviewed. He did not voluntarily come to us but was found through good, old-fashioned police work, plus tips from the community.â€
Beatrice Spears, a neighbor said she ran to help when she heard gunshots a woman scream. "Seen him in the middle of the street, and I seen his mother in the middle of the street, also. Police were already here, they were just waiting on an ambulance," Spears added.
Details about the suspect have not been released. Police say others are also being questioned.
Police have not released the name of the boy. "He was a good boy," next door neighbor Higgins said.
