Brooklyn fare-beater, Rashaun Robinson, 29, who shot a rookie Brooklyn cop in both legs pleaded guilty to aggravated assault on Friday.
Robinson opened fire on police officers James Li and his partner Randy Chow after they witnessed him get on a B46 bus through the back door in Crown Heights on Feb. 26.
Officer James Li, 26, was hit multiple times in the leg, groin and thigh. He suffered serious nerve damage and now has to walk with a cane.
When Robinson was questioned by the judge if he was responsible for the officer's serious physical injury, which defines the charge of aggravated assault on a police officer, Robinson replied, “he can still walk.â€
“This defendant showed utter contempt for police officers when he opened fire on them three times over a fare beating stop,†Brooklyn DA Ken Thompson said.
Robinson will be sent to prison for 25 years under the deal he received. He was looking at 40 years to life had he been convicted at trial of an attempted murder of an officer.
“I think it is fair,†Li said about the plea agreement.
“This is a good, fair deal that takes a potential cop killer off the streets for 25 years,†Police union chief Patrick Lynch said after the hearing in Brooklyn Supreme Court. “The shame is that the police officer will deal with this for the rest of his life.â€
Li had graduated from the police academy just two months before the shooting incident.
Robinson will be sentenced in September.
