Former New Orleans police officers are returning to duty to help make the city safer.

The city reached out to the former officers to see if some were interested to come back and help rebuild the police department, which has been suffering for several years with manpower.

Authorities say 100 former officers are coming back to help make the city they love a better place to live.

"This is my home," former officer Pearla Gibbs, who retired in 2006, said. "The NOPD is my heart. Once it's in, it's in."

NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison said the retired police officers will be sent out on a nightly basis to give support in commissioned volunteer roles.
