Going to Federal

I would like to be a police officer one day. I think after a while I would like to go work for the feds. I wanted to know is it common for police officers to leave to become a fed? Have any of them left and then come back because they didn't like working there.

It happens once in a while, my buddy left the police force to go work for the FBI and he loves it.
