A 28-year-old Pennsylvania woman, who was handcuffed, allegedly stole the police car she was in and led police officers on a high-speed chase Wednesday night.
Authorities say Roxanne Rimer from Beaver Falls, Pa., was being detained on shoplifting suspicions at the time of the incident.
Police say Rimer managed to slide open the glass partition that separates the front and back areas of the patrol car, and then climb from the rear seat into the driver's seat.
“With her back turned and her hands cuffed behind her back, she manages to put it in gear and drive, said Center Township Police Chief Barry Kramer. "And from what we can gather, she drove at very high speeds with that position, somehow manipulating the gears and steering the wheel. Thank God no one else was hurt.â€
She lead officers on a high speed chase through several small towns about 40 miles outside of Pittsburgh. The chase lasted about a half-hour, and at times the suspect reached speeds up to 120 mph.
Chief Kramer said Rimer eventually abandoned the patrol car, took off by foot and then got into another vehicle that led police on another chase.
"She then either jumped out of that vehicle or the vehicle dropped her off in Aliquippa, and Aliquippa police picked her up still in handcuffs,†said Kramer.
Rimer was taken to Beaver County Jail, she if facing several charges, including aggravated assault. Chief Kramer said the arresting officer found suspected heroin needles on her.
