SEASIDE PARK, N.J. - Firefighters are battling a huge fire on the Seaside Park boardwalk.
The fire started at the iconic Kohr's Frozen Custard at 1800 Boardwalk at around 2:00 p.m.

The pier and surrounding area are now being evacuated.

Firefighters said they were having problems getting adequate water and with flying embers spreading the fire due to winds in the area.

It has now spread to 20 businesses, and firefighters are being pulled back because of the intensity.

"We've got everyone in the county coming," Seaside Heights Police Chief Thomas Boyd said. "We're in trouble here. We've got major problems."

As of 4:30 p.m., firefighters were ordered to pull back because of the intensity of the flames, officials said.

"Several firefighters and residents were being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation," said Boyd.

Seaside Park Mayor Robert Matthies said things seemed to be going well after Sandy until this fire struck. "We had some great weather, we worked very hard, both Seaside Heights and Seaside Park during the summer to restore the community. We've had a great Labor Day weekend and now this," he said. "This is certainly going to be a catastrophe."

"It just kept getting worse and worse and worse, " Seaside Heights resident said about the fire.
