Is it too late to press charges?

I live alone with my older brother and last week he hit me real hard. I called the police and they came to the house. The police officer told me they would arrest him if I chose to. I decided not to have him arrested. But I am still so angry at my brother, this isn't the first time he has hit me. Today I decided I would like to press charges, however my friend told me I can't do that because its too late, he said I only can press charge while the officers were here that day. Can I still press charges or is too late? Can I go to the police station and have him arrested?

You didn't tell us what state you live in, in the state I live in you could apply for charges up to a year and a day from the date of the incident.
